The 761st Tank Battalion, nicknamed the "Black Panthers," was the first all-Black armored unit to enter combat in World War II. They fought in six European countries, participating in four major Allied campaigns under the Third, Seventh, and Ninth Armies. The battalion faced significant challenges, including severe weather, difficult terrain, strong enemy fortifications, and shortages of personnel and equipment, yet they inflicted heavy casualties on the German army and captured or destroyed thousands of enemy weapons. Despite their combat achievements, the unit received a Presidential Unit Citation in 1978, 33 years after the war's end, and Sergeant Ruben Rivers was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1997, 53 years after his death in battle. The battalion's motto was "Come Out Fighting".
